One Parish, Three Churches

St Mary’s – Children and Youth

Children and Young people are always welcome at St Mary’s and are valued members of our church family. Our mission is to help our children and young people to enjoy being with God.

Sunday Mornings

During the 9.30am services we run explorer groups for all the children aged 3-11 years, although younger children are welcome with parents. On the first Sunday of the month, for the first 15 minutes, the children stay in the main church service and join in the worship before heading out to their two groups and on other Sundays the children start in their groups and join the service to receive communion or a blessing:

  • Bubbles for 3-7 year olds   My favourite part is the colouring and making things”
  • X-tream for 8-11 year olds   “It’s fun seeing my friends”

In our groups the children enjoy learning about the Bible though discussion, games, craft and technology. We learn how to listen and talk to God.

After the services all ages stay to enjoy refreshments.     “The biscuits are great”

Occasionally, especially for festivals the 9.30am service is all age with the children remaining in church throughout the service taking part in leading the prayers, doing the readings and other activities.

Young people aged 11-18 years old are encouraged to take an active part in the services, taking on various roles. A new parish wide Youth Group called SAS meets on Sunday evenings from 5-7 pm for fun, games and food, and a reflection on some aspects of faith. Occasional trips are organised and visiting speakers/leaders also lead the group on occasion. SAS is open to children and young people in school years 6-9.

Sunday Afternoons

(Simply worship – 4.30pm on 3rd Sunday of month)

On the third Sunday of each month we have this special children’s and family service which lasts 45 – 60 minutes. It is suitable for pre-school and primary school aged children. The service is very creative and informal. We usually do craft and often games or drama during the service; we use a mixture of contemporary worship songs and some traditional songs suitable for children. The service is screen based.

Workshops/Holiday Clubs

At different times through the year we hold whole and half day workshops for all children in our community.
