St Mary’s – Children and Youth

Children and Young people are always welcome at St Mary’s and are valued members of our church family. Our mission is to help our children and young people to enjoy being with God.

Sunday Mornings

During the 9.30am services, except on the first Sunday of the month, we run explorer groups for all the children aged 3-11 years. Younger children are welcome in the groups, accompanied by a parent. The children start in their groups and join the service to receive communion or a blessing. On the first Sunday of the month the children stay in the main church service with their families.  The children are encouraged to take part in leading the prayers, doing the readings and other activities.

Our explorer groups are:

  • Bubbles for 3-7 year olds   My favourite part is the colouring and making things”
  • X-tream for 8-11 year olds   “It’s fun seeing my friends”

In our groups the children enjoy learning about the Bible though discussion, games, craft and technology. We learn how to listen and talk to God.

After the services all ages stay to enjoy refreshments.     “The biscuits are great”

Young people aged 11-18 years old are encouraged to take an active part in the services, taking on various roles.

SAS Youth Group

A parish wide Youth Group called SAS meets on Sunday evenings from 5-7 pm for fun, games and food, and a reflection on some aspects of faith. Each term’s programme includes a trip, (e.g. bowling, rafting, high ropes, …) and a session focused on service to the community.  Visiting speakers also lead the group on occasion. SAS is open to children and young people in school years 6-9.

Sunday Afternoons

(Simply worship – 4.30pm on 3rd Sunday of month)

On the third Sunday of each month we have a service which is particularly suited to families. The service lasts 45 – 60 minutes, and aims to be creative and informal. We usually do craft and often games or drama during the service; we use a mixture of contemporary worship songs and some traditional songs suitable for children. The service is screen based.

St. Nicholas’ has a similar service at 4pm on the first Sunday of the month.

Workshops/Holiday Clubs

At different times through the year we hold whole and half day workshops for all children in our community.
