12th Harpenden (St. Nicholas) Scout Group
The Scout Association offers everyday adventure and activity to almost 400,000 young people across the UK. Its purpose is: to help young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as Members of their local, national and international communities.
Scouting makes a positive contribution to society by helping young people to develop as active members of the community who are self-reliant, caring, responsible and show commitment.
Scouting works well when young people enjoy learning by working in partnership with adults. They do this by taking part in a variety of activities and new experiences, exploring the outdoors, participating in teams and taking responsibility.
12th Harpenden St Nicholas Scout Group formed in 1992, and whilst we are the youngest Scout Group in Harpenden we do nonetheless have a strong heritage, including both girls and boys from the outset. We meet at St Nicholas church hall and, in addition to a full programme of scout activities, play an active role in the church’s programme of children-focused services, and charitable fundraising . Many of our young members attend St Nicholas School and/or the church choir.
During term-time our beaver colony (age 6 to 8) meets between 5 and 6pm on Mondays; our cub pack (age 8 to 10.5) from 6.30 to 8:00 on Wednesdays; and scout troop (10.5 to 14) from 7.30 to 9.00 on Thursdays. In addition our cubs and scouts play a prominent role in the annual Harpenden Gang Show and we have a very active outdoor programme including spring camp and autumn pack holiday for the cubs, and for scouts, several weekend camps and a week-long summer camp.
We maintain a waiting list for entry to beavers at age 6, and have occasional places for young people to cubs and to scouts. Our policy on admission is to give priority to the younger siblings of existing members and to the children of our adult leaders. The remaining vacancies are allocated to children on our waiting list.
Our adult leaders, all of who are unpaid volunteers, are critical to our success. Being a leader doesn’t require great expertise, is tremendously rewarding, and is mostly, if not always, enjoyable! Comprehensive training and support is provided throughout. We aim to have a strong leadership team so each one of us is free to contribute when we can.
